What is FIFA ranking?
The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking is the official global ranking of men's national football teams, calculated and published by FIFA. It assigns each of FIFA's 211 member associations a points total based on results in all senior international fixtures — friendlies, qualifiers, continental finals, World Cups. Higher points = higher rank. The rankings update after every international window.
How is the FIFA ranking calculated?
Since 2018 FIFA uses the SUM ranking system, derived from the Elo formula. Each match changes both teams' points by an amount that depends on: (a) the match's importance weight (friendly = 5, qualifier = 25, continental final or World Cup KO = 60), (b) the result (win, draw, loss, plus goal-difference adjustment for blowouts), and (c) the opponent's relative strength. Beating a strong team gains more points than beating a weak one.

France enters the World Cup 2026 with the highest FIFA ranking of any qualified nation. The top five qualified nations by FIFA rank are France (1), Spain (2), Argentina (3), England (4), Portugal (5).
Does FIFA ranking predict the World Cup winner?
Not reliably. Of the eight FIFA World Cup champions since the modern ranking began in 1993, only three were ranked FIFA #1 going into the tournament. World Cups have famous upsets — Greece won Euro 2004 ranked outside the top 10, Saudi Arabia beat eventual champions Argentina in 2022 ranked #51 vs #3. FIFA ranking is a useful prior; Onside's Monte Carlo simulator combines it with squad strength, fixture context and matchday form for a sharper probability.
