The new World Cup format, explained
QUICK ANSWER
The 2026 World Cup has 48 teams in 12 groups of 4. Top 2 from each group plus the 8 best third-placed teams advance to a new Round of 32. From there it's standard knockout to the final at MetLife Stadium on 19 July 2026. Total: 104 matches over 39 days across the USA, Canada and Mexico.

The “best 8 third-placed teams” rule
With 12 groups, the top two from each (24 teams) plus the 8 best third-placed nations make up the 32-team knockout. The 12 third-placed teams are ranked on this exact tiebreaker order:
- Points — from the 3 group games.
- Goal difference across the group stage.
- Goals scored.
- Fair-play score (yellow / red card deductions).
- FIFA draw position — the only random tiebreaker.
The bottom 4 third-placed teams are eliminated. There is no third-place play-off between them.
