FPL 2026/27

The new bonus rules,
priced in points

Clearances, blocks and interceptions now earn 1 BPS per 3 actions instead of 1 per 2. Run last season back through the new rule and the biggest loser is Senesi, down 59 BPS across the season. Everyone below is a defender who was rewarded for exactly the thing that just got harder.

WHAT THIS PAGE DOES NOT CLAIM

Two of the three bonus changes are not quantified here. Removing the penalty for being tackled would need times-dribbled-past, and the goalkeeper save rework would need shot classification and big-chance flags. FPL publishes neither. We would rather show one number we can stand behind than three where two are guesses.

2025/26 season totals recomputed under the 2026/27 clearances rule. BPS is not points — it decides who gets the 3, 2 and 1 bonus in each match. Snapshot 2026-07-27.

QUESTIONS

What changed in the FPL bonus point system for 2026/27?

Three things. Clearances, blocks and interceptions now earn 1 BPS per 3 actions instead of 1 per 2. Players are no longer penalised 1 BPS for being tackled. And goalkeepers now earn a flat 2 BPS for every save, plus an extra 1 for saving a big chance, while no longer earning BPS for shots from outside the box. The stated aim was to reduce the overlap with defensive contribution points and improve the prospects of goalkeepers, full-backs and attacking players.

Why does this page only quantify one of the three changes?

Because only one is computable from data FPL publishes. The clearances change can be recalculated exactly from season totals. The tackled-penalty removal would need times-dribbled-past, and the goalkeeper rework would need shot classification and big-chance flags. FPL publishes neither, so we do not estimate them rather than presenting a guess next to a calculation.

Does this mean centre-backs are no longer worth picking?

The losses are real but modest against a season total, and they hit the players who were already the highest defensive scorers. The bigger question for 2026/27 is whether defensive contribution volume repeats at all, given that the rules around it changed and a number of managers did too.
