Why the VC pick decides 4-7 points per season
The vice-captain only earns when your captain blanks. In FPL, "blank" means failing to play 60+ minutes — injury, illness, red card, or rotation. Across 38 gameweeks, the average top-1k captain blanks 6-8 times. Each blank = your VC takes over the captaincy bonus. A correctly-chosen VC delivers +4 to +7 points per season vs a poorly-chosen VC. Over a season that compounds into rank movement — 4-7 points = 6,000-10,000 mini-league rank shift.
The curve above plots the EV gain of getting the VC right vs the captain blank probability. At low blank rates (<5%) the VC barely matters. At higher rates (15%+) the VC choice rivals captaincy in EV. The 5 most-common blank scenarios are marked on the curve.
The 3-rule VC framework
Rule 1 — VC on the same fixture as your captain. If Haaland is your captain at home vs Sunderland, your VC should also be at home vs Sunderland — Foden or Doku. Why: if Haaland is subbed at 60 minutes, his BPS competitors are in the same match. If your VC plays elsewhere, you compete against a different bonus pool.
Rule 2 — VC at a different price tier from your captain. Captain Haaland (£14m) + VC Watkins (£9m) covers the premium AND the value bracket. Captain Haaland + VC Isak (£10m) covers the same tier — riskier on rotation.
Rule 3 — match VC playing time to captain blank scenario. Captain has a CL midweek before GW1? VC must be a 95%+ minutes player at a no-Europe club (Watkins, Isak). Captain on a 60-minute pre-season minutes flag? VC should be 88%+ minutes confidence.
The 5 captain-blank scenarios
Marked on the curve above:
• 4% blank probability — Red-card risk. Bruno Fernandes carries 4% red-card risk per game; one match per 25 he gets dismissed. Almost negligible but cumulative over 38 games = 1.5 blanks/season.
• 10% blank — Saka away at top-six. Saka's away minutes-against-top-six drop from 90 to 78 in 25/26 data. 10% chance the captain underperforms vs your VC.
• 18% blank — Haaland away at top-six. The biggest captain-blank scenario the model flags. Haaland's away top-six xG is 0.78 vs his home bottom-half xG of 1.92. Choosing your VC on these weeks is a +2.6 EV decision.
• 28% blank — Captain rotation flag. Pre-season minutes confirm rotation risk. +4.2 EV from a correctly-chosen VC.
• 45% blank — Late-week injury doubt. Captain in question on Friday/Saturday. +7 EV from a stronger VC, or alternative captaincy entirely.
When to override captain → VC and re-captain
Three triggers for switching captain to the VC and re-captaining elsewhere:
1. Captain ruled out 24 hours before deadline (Friday news). Your VC inherits the armband. Choose your next-tier captain — Bruno + Haaland (or whoever was your VC) — and have the third tier ready.
2. Captain rotation flag confirmed on Saturday morning team-news (pre-deadline). Trigger the VC swap and re-captain.
3. Captain rest-day rumour (Champions League midweek before). Most managers wait too long. The model says: trigger the swap by Thursday evening.
In all three cases, the correctly-chosen VC saves 4-9 points + a free transfer.
