The short answer
Bukayo Saka and Bruno Fernandes are the two midfield captaincy options most managers weigh when they want an alternative to the premium forward. They get their points differently: Saka from the right of a side that creates a great deal, Bruno from the middle of the pitch, with set pieces on top. In most weeks the fixture decides between them.

Check one: the fixture
Start with the Next 3 row in the table above. A home game against a side FPL rates as easy is the strongest captaincy setting in the game, and a hard away trip the weakest. When Saka and Bruno Fernandes have clearly different fixtures, that is usually the week's answer on its own.
Arsenal tend to have the stronger side, United the more varied set-piece threat. In a week where both fixtures look similar, the one at home is usually the better armband.
Check two: minutes
Then the Status row. A player flagged as doubtful, or back from a knock, carries the risk of a short appearance. The captain doubles whatever he scores, including a cameo, and the vice-captain takes over only if the captain plays no minutes at all.
Arsenal rotate their wide players more often than United rotate Bruno, particularly around European ties, so Saka carries the higher minutes risk in congested weeks.
Check three: ownership and your rank
Ownership decides what the armband does to your rank rather than your points. Captaining the more-owned of the two is the protective choice: if he returns, most of the game returns with you. Captaining the other is an attack, worth making only when the first two checks give him a real edge that week.
Neither is a pure differential, but the two are owned by different shares of managers. If you are protecting a lead, captain the one more of your rivals own; if you are chasing, the other.
