The answer first — pay the £12.0m
Yes — the Onside model says Bruno Fernandes is worth £12.0m. The model projects him at 7.5 points per gameweek — a ~285-point pace over 38 — which makes him cheaper per projected point than Haaland at £15.5m. And the projection is grounded in what already happened, not in hope: from the moment Michael Carrick took charge, Fernandes averaged 7.6 points per match, the best of any player in the game over that span.
Per the official FPL price reveal (22 July 2026), Fernandes costs £12.0m for 2026/27 — up £3.0m from £9.0m, the joint-biggest rise in the game. It equals his highest-ever FPL price: £12.0m in 2021/22, on the back of a 244-point season.
The rise follows 235 points in 25/26 — second-top scorer overall, from 9 goals and 24 assists. The price is the game catching up with what the Onside model has said since June: Fernandes is the new premium-mid template anchor, and the strongest captaincy alternative to Haaland on the board.
The Carrick split — the stat that justifies the rise
Carrick took charge at GW22 and moved Manchester United to a 4-2-3-1 with Fernandes as the No 10. The before/after is the whole argument for £12.0m.

Same player, redeployed. Fewer shots from deep, double the big-chance creation, and an attacking-return rate that jumped from roughly one haul in five appearances to one in two — Fernandes returned in 14 of 17 under Carrick. The Onside model's 7.5 points-per-gameweek projection isn't a bet on a new level; it's a bet that the Carrick-era level simply continues into a first full pre-season under the same manager and the same system.

Only one of the eight rates above FDR 3 — the GW4 home fixture against Manchester City. The run averages 2.9, opens with two straight FDR-2 fixtures against promoted Hull and Ipswich, and never asks for back-to-back hard weeks.
The Onside model's own season-long fixture score has United at 2.8 on the 1-5 scale (for reference, Manchester City sit at 2.3 — the softest profile among the sides that matter here). Translation: United's full-season schedule is mid-pack among the top clubs, but the opening eight specifically is soft — which is exactly the window in which a £12.0m purchase has to pay for itself before the first wildcard conversations start.
One more early-season plus: Portugal exited the World Cup in the last 16, so Fernandes is back for United's final pre-season friendlies rather than arriving days before the opener.
Captain maths vs Haaland — the £27.5m double-up
Haaland was revealed at £15.5m the same day. Owning both costs £27.5m of the £100m budget, leaving £72.5m for the other thirteen squad slots — an average of £5.6m per remaining player. That's tight but playable; it's the same structural trade-off the template made in the Salah-Haaland years.
The hauls argument says the double-up is worth the squeeze. Fernandes produced 12 double-figure hauls in 25/26 — more than Haaland's 10, with the next-best player in the game on 8. Two of the three most explosive assets in FPL now play for the two Manchester clubs, and they cost £3.5m apart.
That gap is the captaincy story of the season. Verdict: worth it. Fernandes at £12.0m is the first midfielder in the squad, the strongest captaincy alternative to Haaland, and the piece the 26/27 template gets built around. The +£3.0m rise prices in the Carrick effect — it doesn't price it out.
